Food search finds nothing

Food search is powered by the fatsecret Platform API. It starts after you have typed two characters and pause, lists generic foods first and branded products after, and shows calories with the default serving on each result.

Nothing matches

  • Use the generic name. The database lists oatmeal, chicken breast, and whole milk as generic entries; a long product name is more likely to miss.
  • Try the brand alone. Brand entries are listed after generic ones and often under the maker’s spelling.
  • Scan the barcode if the product has one. See Barcode scanning.
  • Create a custom food. Create Custom Food at the bottom of the tracker saves the label’s values, and Create & Log logs it at once. From then on it appears in search under Your custom foods whenever its name or brand matches.
  • Log it again lists what you have logged in the last 14 days and is the quickest way to repeat a meal.

Results are slow or fail

The search calls the database live. A slow connection delays results; if nothing comes back at all, check the status page for an incident and try again in a few minutes.

Nutrition looks wrong on a result

The entry is the product as listed by its maker, per the serving shown. Pick a different serving on the portion step, or log a custom food from the label if the entry itself is wrong. VegaLoop cannot edit the database.

Recipe search

The Recipes tab searches VegaLoop’s own library and your recipes first, then the fatsecret recipe catalog. No recipes found means neither matched; clear the filters (a meal chip or Favorites narrows the search) and try a single ingredient.
